The social production of school mathematical thinking

Resumen
Studies of teaching and learning that aim to focus on mathematical thinking generally draw on notions of what might constitute the essence of the thinking of a mathematician. I will examine research that looks at how mathematical thinking is produced in the classroom and at how different ‘forms of pedagogy have different outcomes for different groups of learners. I will report on a number of projects in which I have been engaged that address this theme. | will then consider how sociological and psychological perspectives might combine to inform research on teaching and learning mathematics.
