Resumen
In the US, we are examining policies, processes, and practices to increase student opportunities during and after their compulsory education is completed. What can we do to help our students see themselves as capable of learning mathematics? Let’s examine the critical conversations that need to occur in order to provide an equitable mathematics experience for all our students. These conversations must help all stakeholders identify the purposes of learning math, consider the existing structures, and decide what should be changed; examine how to equitably teach mathematics; and develop strategies to help develop a deep understanding of mathematics. While recognizing that different settings have their own unique characteristics, we must all examine what we can do to help students better learn mathematics and increase their opportunities in the world around them.
